DMV Proof of Residency (Address) Letter

Updated January 16, 2024

A Dept. of Motor Vehicles (DMV) proof of residency letter is an affidavit made by a third (3rd) party to claim an individual is a State resident or to prove that they reside at an address.

May Also Be Used By

  • Employers – If the employee can not produce a pay stub a letter from the employer may suffice.
  • Landlords – If the tenant does not have a lease agreement and only a verbal or other arrangement exists.
  • Non-Profit Organizations – If the resident is in the care of a homeless shelter or related living conditions.
  • Roommates – If the individual does not have a lease agreement but has roommates that can acknowledge their residency claims.

Writing Your Own Letter

Use the Standard Affidavit of Residency if an individual is writing a letter for themselves acknowledging their residency status. If an individual is writing their own affidavit, it’s recommended that the letter is signed in the presence of a notary public or at least one (1) witness. In addition, there should be at least two (2) types of documentation proving the individual resides at the claimed street address.
